brotherly "love"

"Awwww, are you hugging your little brother?" I'm gushing, so proud that Luca is finally warming up to Andre. But, then... you saw the video. You know how this ends.

Alain and I decided to have two children close together so they could keep each other company and teach each other about the value and challenges of sharing, sorting through conflict, sustaining friendships, compromise... the list is endless. Now that we have Luca and Andre, we teach them on a daily basis how to respect each other, share toys, say hello and sorry, and all the things that we hope will lead them to be good siblings as children and into adulthood.

There are some times, however, when we can't help but laugh at their ways of showing discontent with having to share the attention of their parents. After all, what would you say if your husband one day just brought another woman home and said that from now on you have to share everything with her and complaining about it will get you a time out! I'm very sure I'd squeeze in a few pushes and shoves while I thought no one was looking!

I just hope the learning process for them is as smooth as it can possibly be.

  1. This is sooo funny! I love this video. Whenever I see my children in a situation like this, I wonder if I should intercede or not but I have come to the conclusion that they need to work out some things on their own (as long as it's fairly mild conflict).

  2. The video is hysterical!

I don't think I've ever heard anyone compare sibling rivalry to another woman. Now that you mention it, it's a wonder those of us who were younger kids survived, at all!

  4. I had to work extra hard to keep a straight face while filming and then speak to Luca and tell him that he should not push his brother. I'll let him know how funny this was once he grows up... perhaps when he's 50?
