the perfect age

If a genie appeared and asked if I could extend a period in my children's life for just a little longer so I could enjoy it to the fullest, I would answer 1 year. Let's say Andre's age right now to be exact and ask to freeze him for a little while at 14 months.

Andre sits, stands and walks on his own, allowing me to have free hands and get some respite from constant carrying. He is learning to use his hands and explore the world with them so a piece of paper, a spoon or a baloon can provide endless entertainment while I do the grocery shopping. Andre squeals in delight every time he gets a little attention and always responds to my words with a big smile. He sleeps through the night so I do also. Andre no longer breastfeeds, drinks formula or eats baby food. A sippy cup is all I have to carry! Andre is learning to love all kinds of food and the possibilities for his palate are endless. He's learned to communicate some basic needs, but is still delightfully unaware of the power of a tantrum.

I remember how much I enjoyed Luca at this age. If only I could also have had him that way a little longer.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a mom is to see Luca and Andre grow, learn new concepts, master new skills, teach me about the world through a child's eyes. I would not trade that for anything in the world. All I am asking is that they stay this adorable just a little longer. Is that so much to ask?

  1. For me, the age would be 4 years old. They are sooo funny, but not as much work.

  3. I agree that the time between 12 and 18 months is so great. No tantrums, just a little protesting here and there which is actually cute. I love this picture. He looks like a miniature grown up!
