the value of friendships

About two summers ago, two of my friends were talking when they brought up the idea of getting together as a group on a regular basis. Until that time, I had many girlfriends and saw each of them ocassionaly, sometimes in a group setting, sometimes in pairs, sometimes one by one.

As I overheard the idea, it dawned on me that since we are all busy it would be great to agree on a time and meet every week so we've been doing it ever since. Not all of us make it every week, but there is always good representation. We do a range of things, from going to the movies to just having coffee or walking along the boardwalk. We've experienced engagements, baby and wedding showers, weddings, pregnancies and miscarriages, birthdays and injuries, break ups and accomplishments. Most importantly, we are experiencing those things together and we are supporting each other through them.

While my husband is a great companion and source of support, it is healthy to lean on others and to be leaned on. In just the course of those two years, even with some serious things having happened, I can honestly say that my life is more satisfying and a lot of it has to do with the wonderful, amazing women who are in my life. Not just those who I see every week, but also those who I see in other occasions, as well as those in the blogging and professional communities where I belong.

Do you have a source of support for which you are thankful?

  1. I know what you mean. I recently moved and one of the things I miss the most is the support from my friends. Although we keep in touch, it's just not the same.

  2. That is one thing I really wish for. A small group of girlfriends like that. You are lucky you have that.

  3. It takes time and a little coordination, but it's so worthwhile to have that support. At the "ripe old age" of 30 something, I finally found mine. Best luck to you!
