the remedy for nightly wakings

Andre had to sleep in our bed for a few days. He prefers to sleep in his crib so he slept as far away from us as he could,
causing us to stay awake in fear he'd fall off the bed any moment.

A few weeks ago, Luca began waking up at night, causing quite a sleep disruption for the entire family and much bickering amongst Alain and I about how to best handle the situation. While I cannot say that the problem is completely resolved, we have made large strides of progress.

The night I wrote my post, I tucked Luca in bed with his Buzz Light Year doll and told him that, where he to wake up at night, Buzz would keep him company and protect him. Since Luca had taken to waking up Andre to get our attention, I should have foreseen that the large and heavy Buzz doll would become a pain-inflicting weapon. Buzz will never sleep in Luca's bed again.

We are now in week 4 since the night-waking began and Luca wakes up once and visits our bedroom, but does not put up a fight and goes back to sleep for the rest of the night when we promptly return him to his bed. This is a big improvement and there is light at the end of the tunnel. Much like with potty training, the approach that worked well ended up being a "no big deal" attitude. When he woke up, we put him back in bed with a quiet "Luca should sleep in in his own bed" and promptly removed Andre from the crib and put him in our bedroom. No scolding, no long explanations. Basically, no reaction.

We are sleeping much better these days, and I feel ready to return to the office from my "staycation" on Monday.
